COMPREHENSIVE DENTAL CARE

First hour of care

Rest and Recovery

After your procedure, gauze will be placed over the extraction site to help form a protective blood clot.

  • Keep gauze in place for at least 45 minutes
  • Apply gentle pressure
  • Replace gauze if saturated
  • Rest quietly

Do not disturb the clot — it is essential for healing.

Managing swelling and discomfort

Swelling and soreness are normal after wisdom tooth removal. To manage discomfort:

  • Apply ice packs (20 min on / 20 min off)
  • Take prescribed medication as directed
  • Keep head elevated when resting
  • Limit activity the first day

Most patients resume normal activities the following day.

Preventing Dry Socket

A stable blood clot protects the extraction site. Losing it too early can cause a painful condition called dry socket.

For the first few days:

  • Do NOT use a straw
  • Do NOT rinse vigorously
  • Do NOT spit forcefully
  • Do NOT smoke

Eating & Drinking

Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods during initial healing.

Recommended Foods:

  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies (no straw)
  • Pudding
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soup (lukewarm)

Do not chew directly on extraction sites. Foods to avoid:

  • Crunchy foods
  • Hot beverages
  • Spicy foods
  • Sticky snacks

First 24 hours

To protect healing:
  • Rest the day of surgery
  • Resume light activity the next day
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Avoid bending or heavy lifting

Overexertion can increase bleeding.

Oral Hygiene After Surgery:
  • Resume brushing the next day
  • Avoid brushing directly over the site
  • Rinse gently with salt water after 24 hours
  • Follow any prescribed rinse instructions

Do not disturb stitches.
